Rainbow Push Fights Against Injustices in the Workplace
Columbus, Ga. – On Friday, December 11, 2009 members of the local Rainbow PUSH Coalition picked up signs, put on heavy coats and took their grievance to the streets. Led by Dr. William B. Howell, President/CEO of Columbus Chapter Rainbow PUSH, protesters marched in rapidly dropping temperatures and under the growing threat of rain.
According to Dr. Howell, the group was marching to address the dissatisfaction and complaints concerning the WalMart Store (#1338) located on Buena Vista Road.  “Today we have a serious crises in America. We are a nation adrift, communities have been ravaged by industry closing and families are struggling from pay check to pay check,” said Dr. Howell. He continued, “Yet in the midst of these struggles, Rainbow PUSH is here at present to answer the complaints of fellow citizens.”Employees, former employees and customers who feel they are being bullied by the management of the Buena Vista Road Store approached Rainbow PUSH.  “The complaints are serious and cannot be swept under the rug as an isolated incident with no meaning. Store #1338 needs change,” said Dr. Howell.
“The things WalMart  (Buena Vista Road) has been accused of reflects serious infirmities in the nation’s largest retail store of goods and services.  May it be clear that Rainbow Push is aware of WalMart’s efforts to improve its public health programs, new health programs for its employees, creation of millions of jobs in the work place, expand its infrastructure around the world, and its donation of millions of dollars to charities,” said Dr. Howell.
However, “during this holiday season, Rainbow Push calls on Wal-Mart to become truly responsible, ethical and righteous company. It cannot let one apple spoil the whole barrel.
“I have attempted to contact the manager at the store many times, but to date, I have not received a return phone call,” said Dr. Howell. He reported that the management allegedly has created a hostile, unjust, and unfair work environment.
To this end, Rainbow PUSH is calling for an economic boycott of Wal-Mart Store #1338 on Buena Vitsa Road. “This boycott will be lifted after the following conditions are met: Rainbow Push Regional Director Mr. Joe Beasley and Rev. Dr. Howell, meet with Wal-Mart officials next week; the present policies of the store are changed to be in line with Wal-Mart policy; when citizens of this community can shop at Wal-Mart on Buena Vista Road without the fear of being intimidated or aggravated; when the workforce feel they can disagree with management without loosing their job; when fair and equitable treatment is extended to all and not just a select few; and when management is changed
